About Us

Urmston and District Scouts covers the areas of Urmston, Flixton, Davyhulme and Partington. Every week we help over 600 young people aged 6-24 develop skills for life, to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

History of Urmston and District Scouts

Formation and Growth
Urmston and District Scouts was officially formed in 1919, just after the end of World War I. The district encompasses 8 Scout Groups:

  • 3 in Davyhulme
  • 2 in Flixton
  • 2 in Urmston
  • 1 in Partington

Since its inception, the district has been dedicated to helping young people aged 6 to 25 develop essential life skills, build confidence, and embrace adventure. Today, it supports over 500 young people each week through a wide range of activities including camping, hiking, swimming, abseiling, cycling, and canoeing.

Notable Figures
One notable historical connection is Roy Chadwick, the chief designer of the Lancaster Bomber, who lived in Urmston. During his early career at British Westinghouse, he worked with George Hicks, the first Group Scout Leader of 3rd Davyhulme, and Lesley Naylor, who served as District Commissioner for many years.

Scouting Spirit
The district embodies the core values of the Scouting movement, which was founded by Robert Baden-Powell in the early 20th century. Like the broader UK Scouts, Urmston and District Scouts has evolved over the decades, adapting to the needs of modern youth while preserving the adventurous and community-focused spirit of its origins.
